Paul and Ben, also known as gude/laurance, have been performing together since June of 2000. They contributed regularly to Annex Theatre’s monthly late-night cabaret Spin the Bottle from March 2003 to October 2014. Below is the definitive list of each one of their performances. All performances took place at Spin the Bottle unless otherwise noted.

Improv Slide Show: Paul improvises a story to random slides pulled from Ben’s family’s photo slide archive.

Nice Guys and Fast Women: Paul and Ben present their monumental opus in front of the Spin the Bottle crowd.

October 4, 2002
Deconstructing Improv: Paul dreams he and Ben did improv at Spin the Bottle, so they decide to make the dream come true; only it turns out to be a nightmare filled with duct tape, marshmallows, and John DeShazo.

December 6, 2002
I Love Oatmeal: Bruce Hall is the host of a Jerry Springer-style show where Ben owns a can of oatmeal that Paul is in love with. But soon the Pop Tart storms on stage and all hell breaks loose!

This Is Me, This Is My House: Paul and Ben debut their new electronic music band “Glitcher,” complete with slide-show accompaniment.

Introducing gude/laurance: Paul and Ben introduce their new performance art duo, with Ben on ukulele supporting Paul the angry poet.

Welcome to the New Space: Spin the Bottle has a new home at Freehold Theater, and Paul and Ben are the first to welcome the audience.

Market Research Theatre: At the time, Annex was producing a piece of theater based on market research. Paul and Ben decided to steal the concept.

Hai Kee Do: Spin the Bottle falls on a Thursday this July, thanks to Independence Day taking up the first Friday, confusing Paul and Ben.

Extreme S’Mores: Paul and Ben modify a familiar campfire snack, making it violent and grotesque.

Letter To Paul: Ben can’t make Spin the Bottle this month, and so sends a letter to Paul which he reads for the first time on stage.

January 2, 2004
Jumpstart the Funk: Paul and Ben present an instructional song about how to jump start your funk in the wintertime.

The Rise and Fall of Dr. Egas Moniz: Dr. Egas Moniz was a pioneer in the field of brain surgury, championing what he called a leucotomy. A pre-cursor to the lobotomy, a leucotomy severed the frontal lobes from each other, rendering a previously “insane” person docile and manageable by the psychiatric staff. He subsequently won a nobel prize in medicine, and was seriously injured by a former patient. Paul and Ben re-enacted this short history in three minutes in clown.

Pants, Motherfucker: Paul and Ben, with friends Zack and Rachel, debut their new agro-pop fusion noise band “Orange Drink,” and their fabulous new song. Sadly, no evidence of the song exists to this day.

Inside Joke: Two angels discover the humanitarian atrocities the US military has been doling out on the people of Afghanistan. Notable as it’s the first instance of Paul getting naked (or mostly naked) on the Spin the Bottle stage.

I’m Gonna Smash My Ukulele: Ben flies solo this month, smashing his ukulele to celebrate the occasion.

Telephone: The first video produced by gude/laurance – a video homage to the popular parlor game “telephone.”

Foxy/Proxy: Ben is flying solo again for Spin the Bottle, and decides to give the audience what they want, Paul and Ben making out – in the form of two girls.

Deconstructing Improv (SketchFest Seattle): Paul and Ben do a rare reprisal of one of their performances for SketchFest’s late night alternative cabaret PUSH.

Naked Dead Guy: Paul and Ben had noticed that their friend Chris had been doing two things lately in all of the shows he’s been in: Getting naked and getting killed. So, they invited him to come be a naked dead guy in one of their performances.
